On-page SEO writing is a marketing strategy writers integrate into landing copy so the page will rank higher in search engine results.
Think of it like a checklist of on-page factors you need to qualify as experienced, expert, authoritative, and trustworthy. The world knows this as E-E-A-T. And on-page SEO helps you establish your ranking.
Yoast is a great source for all things search engine optimization. I use it every day to write pieces of content for my clients. While the brand has a WordPress plugin that automatically evaluates your content’s on-page SEO integrity – not all of us have access to the convenient resource.
So that’s why I thought I’d share an easy Yoast on-page SEO checklist to use as you write content for your own website.
On-page SEO Best Practices
- Choose 1 focus keyword and use it in the first sentence/paragraph
- Mention the keyword in the content title
- Use the keyword in the content at least three times but no more as well
- Each page should be a minimum of 300 words
- Include 1 external link
- Include 1 internal link
- Insert 1 image with the keyword in the file name and alt image description
- Break up lengthy content with <H2> headings
- Mention the keyword in one of the headings
- Utilize transition words in sentences in 25% of the content
I’m a proponent of SEO writing because it’s an affordable and accessible way to market your business online.
There’s no need to spend tons of money on advertising or sponsorships. With the right SEO strategy, Google can discover anyone and direct traffic to the highest quality businesses (a.k.a. yours.)
Another way I look at SEO writing is like a “double whammy.” If you don’t know about it, your chances of ranking on the first search page are low. But if you’re going to write content already, you can write it in a way that optimizes your content without putting money or extra effort into it.
