At first glance, AI and SEO seem like they go hand-in-hand. Sure, artificial intelligence has the ability to help with your site’s search engine optimization. But I’ve recently learned that there is a fine line between the right way to use AI and SEO, and the wrong way.

The right way to use AI and SEO
Using AI in writing is a polarizing topic. One that leads to discussions consisting of awkward pauses, ethical breakdowns, and philosophical reflection.
I am a proponent of AI in writing. Because there is nothing wrong with it. Literally. Even Google, the overseer of all the world’s curiosity, mentions in their search guide and outline for AI use.
“Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines.” Boom. There you have it. Moving forward, the worthiness of AI-generated content to appear on page one of SERP is evaluated on an honor system Google developed called expert, experienced, authority, and trustworthiness – or EEAT. This guideline requires the writer to provide the highest quality work.
A system like this is important because there are users out there who are abusing AI-generated content.
The wrong way to use AI and SEO
Google says those of use Gemini or ChatGPT to churn out content solely to rank high on search pages is abuse. A.k.a. the wrong way.
Regardless of how smart AI is or how advanced you believe the technology to be, it’s best practice to edit any text the program creates. Because at the end of the day, artificial intelligence isn’t an expert. Or experienced. Or an authority or even trustworthy!
As you create content for on-page SEO, consider it a representation of you or your brand at its best. Even if at one point a ‘robot’ made it.
So, should you use AI in SEO?
Honestly, I believe AI is a great tool to help organize information for readers and the algorithm to read easily. I imagine for those beginning to write or need to for other reasons, AI is a lifeline.
Yet as a professional, I’m weary of amateur writers using the tool irresponsibly. The line is narrow and I feel society is not quite balanced enough to walk the line.
But by educating yourself on current SEO news, finding brands with missions and values you align with, and sticking with your ethics – AI is sure to help drive traffic to your website.
